Faculty member awarded fellowship

Ivana Bičak from the Department of English Langauge and Literature has been awarded a fellowship to carry out research using a collection held at Durham University.

The research topic is entitled ‘Monsters on Durham’s Riverbanks: Bertram Colgrave’s Notebooks on OE and ME poems’. Dr Bičak’s project will bring to light extensive notes and lectures on Beowulf by Bertram Colgrave (1888-1968). Remembered as a leading authority on the lives of early English saints with a fruitful career in the US, Colgrave’s Durham past remains in the shadows of history. The transcription and examination of Colgrave’s materials when he was reader at Durham University will contribute to contemporary scholarship not just on Beowulf but also on other OE and ME poems, including Caedmon’s Genesis and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
